The BIODAF® System
BioDAF Water Technology has design the most advanced and efficient system for the treatment of domestic, municipal and industrial wastewaters, the BIO-DAF® System.
We at BioDAF Water Technology have studied the problematic of the conventional wastewater treatment plants. We have developed the most advanced and yet the simplest solution to clean almost any type of residual water.
The BIO-DAF® System WORKS WITH ONLY A 3 MINUTES RETENTION TIME which is capable of giving us crystal clear water. No other system can work under this parameter.
It's well known that conventional wastewater treatment systems have problems with low efficiency, odor generation, space, high investment cost, high maintenance cost and very complicated operation in the controls needful for operation.
The BIO-DAF® System, uses the must advanced clarifier in the world (KROFTA Dissolved Air Flotation Clarifier), proven with more than 3,500 installations worldwide.
The BIO-DAF® System largely replaces the conventional systems used at this moment and improves existing installations.
KROFTA Dissolved air flotation Clarifier’s efficiency can perform ranges up to 99% within 3 MINUTES retention time. NO other DAF-Clarifier has these capabilities.
BIO-DAF® System’s synergy has unique advantages when integrated as a Multi-Plant. You can minimize considerably the footprint and get to make the best out of both systems (biological and physical-chemical).
Compared to other conventional technologies, KROFTA SUPERCELL CLARIFIER’s small footprint helps reduce considerably installation and civil works costs. Besides, if relocation is needed or for architectural or environmental issues the plant needs to be disguised, this operation can be carried out at a very low cost.
KROFTA SUPERCELL’s low sludge water concentration (up to 6% dry base) compared with 0.4 - 0.7 of a conventional plant, reduced the recycled flow to the biological digester increasing its hydraulic capacity up to 35% and automatically its treating capacity as well. This, without the need of over sizing the bioreactor and keeps you from spending extra capital cost on a sludge thickening unit, which either way gives no more than 3%.
This high concentration of sludge obtained by KROFTA SUPERCELL allows a return to the biological digester, yielding a large increase in the efficiency of the treatment plant. The microorganisms in the sludge are in excellent health (digestive capacity) compared to those found in conventional plant's sludge because they are aerobic bacteria, which suffer anoxia during the 2 - 3 hours is the time residence in the conventional settlers.
By keeping the recycled bacteria under optimal conditions, this allows the biological digester to recover quicker than conventional plants against toxic shocks and contingencies and can maintain their treatment efficiency at high levels. This way, classic problems are eliminated due to the fact that sludge is kept completely ventilated (not as conventional systems).
KROFTA SUPERCELL’s lightweight (720 Kg/m2) allows to place the plants one on top of the other or above other equipment (using wasted airspace). This optimizes installation spaces and future growth (this unit is “stackable” and can be assembled even over the bioreactor).
Such compact installation allows you to automate the system as much as you want, with consequent downsizing.
The low amount of polymer used by the Krofta SuperCell, approved for use in drinking water, allows the following advantages:
1.- Obtain in a single equipment a secondary (by position) and tertiary (by the quality of water obtained) clarifier avoiding extra expense of a tertiary clarifier.
2.- Obtain a high sludge dewatering (in a single step) avoiding extra expense in polymers and filter aid on drying beds.
3.- Substantial reduction of the area used for sludge treatment.
4.- Avoids the need to spend on a sludge thickener.
5.- Avoid the need to include a sludge press in the treatment stages, resulting in extra use of polymers and the high mantainance cost they require, if they are built on BIO-SOLAR Type drying bed.
6.- Substantially reduces the return water (after pressing, or after drying bed) to biological treatment, which usually has a BOD of 1000 mg / Lit.
7.- Allows in the case of toxic discharge, to mitigate them while the problem lasts and the operating conditions go back to normal in a substantially shorter time than compared to conventional systems which require long periods of time to stabilize again, and obviously during these periods the discharge will be “out of norm”.
ADDITIONAL ADVANTAGES
SLUDGE TREATMENT:
The SYMBIOTIC TECHNOLOGY, BIOLOGICAL DIGESTION- KROFTA SUPERCELL sludge stabilization N-Virus BioSolar bed, allows to obtain a sludge with low humidity and no odor.
BULKING:
The most responsible of the INEFFICIENCY OF CONVENTIONAL PLANTS, doesn’t affect at all our BIO-DAF® System being that when this serious imbalance appears, the BIO-DAF® System removes the BULKING by flotation without a problem. Not as in conventional plants, where BULKING is going down the drain along with the treated water, contaminating with BOD, suspended solids, fats, oils, etc.
CONCLUSION:
This "symbiosis" can get the best out of each technology, providing security and simplicity of operation which conventional biological systems lack off.
THIS TECHNOLOGY IS RECOMMENDED:
- Where it requieres a high efficiency of treatment the longest time possible in the fewest number of steps.
- Where the quality of treated water must be continuous.
- Where odor and noise should to be controlled.
- Where the capacity of modular treatment wishes to increase.
- Where you want to have the future option of moving the SUPERCELL elsewhere.
- Where visual armony needs to be kept.
- Where it could have constant supply problems which cause (in the case of a conventional biological plant) keep COMPLETELY without treatment for long periods.
- Where you wish to save space.

KROFTA-DISSOLVED AIR FLOTATION (DAF)
What is the Process?
Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) is the process of removing suspended solids, oils and other contaminants via the use of air bubble flotation. Air is dissolved into water, mixed with the waste stream and released from solution while in contact with the contaminants. Air bubbles form, attach to the solids, increase their buoyancy and float the solids to the water's surface. Air is injected under pressure into a recycle stream of clarified DAF effluent. This recycle stream is then combined an mixed with incoming wastewater in an internal contact chamber where dissolved air comes out of solution in the form of very fine bubbles that attach to the contaminants. The bubbles and the contaminants rise to the surface and form a floating bed of material that is removed by a surface skimmer into an internal hopper for further handling. This handling may include a belt filter press or a rotary vacuum drum with DE applied.
Dissolved air flotation systems are designed to remove fats, oils & grease (FOG), suspended solids (TSS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), food/animal production/processing wastes, industrial wastes, hydrocarbon oils/emulsions and many other contaminants. Chemical pre-treatment can often help to improve the performance of contaminant.
It is a proven and effective physical/chemical technology for treating a variety of industrial process and wastewater streams, including those from food processors, and biological wastewater treatment systems.
Why Use a DAF?
The DAF systems have been developed over the last 45 years of basic research and have been installed in a variety of industries. These systems provide basic features not found with other DAF systems:

Treatability,Testing
We have a comprehensive laboratory-testing program to evaluate a waste stream for dissolved air flotation. Portable pilot systems are available to replicate actual process conditions and provide detailed design and operational information for use in the design of a full-scale pre-treatment system.
• The patented air dissolving tube (ADT) greatly simplifies the introduction of atmospheric air to the KROFTA Clarifier. This forefront technology dependability and consistency produces micro air bubbles of the precise size and morphology required for DAF applications.
• The KROFTA ADT is light weight and versatile. If space constraints are a factor at your industrial site, the ADT can be mounted horizontally as well as vertically. The ADT is constructed out of corrosion resistant stainless steel and is designed for high performance as well as durability.
KROFTA MULTIFLOAT
• MULTIFLOAT - One of many size configurations available, the MC 400 is designed for large-volume needs. Like the MF 200 and MF 300, it is equipped with bottom and surface scrapers.
• Low-height rectangular design simplifies site installation and provides the most efficient space utilization. The MULTIFLOAT is the lowest-height unit on the market.
• Sludge blanket exhibits high consistency as proprietary "U" element design provides more efficient separation of solids.
• The MULTIFLOAT scoop provides for efficient and automatic sludge blanket removal. Sludge of extremely high consistency can be removed easily.
• Flow of raw water and pressurized water is introduced beneath the "U" elements. This provides for uniform distribution of the raw water across the entire unit, resulting in faster initial solids separation and near zero horizontal turbulence.
• Separation of settling particles occurs as soon as raw water is introduced into the tank. Sediment removal is provided by an efficient bottom scraper on the MF 40.
• Fully fabricated, bolted steel construction minimizes installation cost and maintenance.
KROFTA SAND-FLOAT
For Potable water applications, clarification and filtration in ONE UNIT
• The SAF. The SAF combines dissolved air flotation with slow sand filtration to produce the highest quality water.
• The SAF unit is the optimum solution for drinking water preparation, municipal sewage treatment or industrial water clarification.
• The dual media filtration (hydroanthrecite / sand) is the final treatment step. This dual media bed produces a sparkling clear product of low turbidity.
